European Leaders Denounce Israel Over Halting Church Access in Jerusalem
Several European officials expressed concern, with some issuing strong condemnations over what they described as a violation of religious freedoms.
Giorgia Meloni said in an official statement that preventing access to the church "constitutes an offense not only to believers, but to every community that recognizes religious freedom."
Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, also criticized the move, calling it "unacceptable" and announcing that he had directed authorities "to summon the Israeli ambassador tomorrow to seek clarification regarding the decision."
French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the incident on social media, stating: "I condemn this decision by the Israeli police, which adds to the worrying increase in violations of the status of Jerusalem’s Holy Sites." He further emphasized the need to ensure a "free exercise of worship" in the city "for all religions."
Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, echoed similar concerns, declaring: "From the Government of Spain, we condemn this unjustified attack on religious freedom and demand that Israel respect the diversity of beliefs and international law. Because without tolerance, coexistence is impossible."
Authorities in Portugal also reacted strongly. In a statement, the country’s foreign ministry said the action "deserves deep condemnation," urging Israeli officials “to guarantee and uphold freedom of religion and worship."
Meanwhile, Karol Nawrocki voiced firm opposition, expressing support for Cardinal Pizzaballa and stating: "The actions of the Israeli police, which I condemn, are an expression of disrespect for Christian tradition and culture."
Malta’s foreign minister, Ian Borg, also raised serious concerns, stressing: "Access to Christianity’s holiest site, especially for private Holy Week liturgy, must be respected. I urge Israeli authorities to reconsider and facilitate worship."
